Together Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Consider this a challenge for partners in committed relationships who are fans of the horror genre: Get comfortable with your partner and watch Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its streaming debut on the Hulu service. On the surface, it might appear like standard biological terror, but within Together exists a deep contemplation about how we choose to love one another.

An Introductory Film Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the actors contribute a special spark to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The plot begins when the couple move from the urban environment to the countryside for Millie’s job. A commonly used plot device, of course, but that’s largely where the conventions end. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists discover an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence takes hold of the couple. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying of scares, blending elements of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes during something grotesque). The director weaves these elements together neatly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and far away from his social circle. He is terrified of the idea of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in another person. This fear is intensified by the reality he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision in Together never makes one partner or the other the clear bad guy.

Both characters face the kind of problems that arise in most partnerships over a long period. Deep down, they still love each other. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to another person, the metaphor avoids being overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Conversely, some couples having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could act as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the finale plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your significant other and utter, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can experience at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform now.
